aromatherapy plants and oils

Superficially, essential oils and fragrance oils are quite similar. Essential  oils, however, are natural plant extracts. Fragrance oils are synthetic, lacking  the therapeutic capabilities for which essential oils are known.

Effects

  • The chemical constituents of essential oils therapeutically promote healing within the body. Safe to inhale and apply topically (although stronger oils may cause photo sensitivity on the skin), those of higher quality can even be consumed.

  Functionality

  • Fragrance oils should never be ingested. Also known as “perfume oils,” they  are typically used to scent soaps and candles. Being synthetic, they are less  volatile than essential oils, so their fragrance lasts longer. They can also  reproduce certain scents not found in nature, for example – cookie dough.

    Warning

    • Since the term aromatherapy isn’t regulated, many labels are deliberately  misleading to justify high prices. The terms “natural,” “aromatherapy oil,” or  “perfume” indicate a fragrance oil.

    Identification

    • An easy way to test for a fragrance oil is to place a drop on a piece of paper.  Fragrance oils usually leave residue after drying, while essential oils do not.

    Considerations

    • The prices of essential oils can fluctuate depending on crop quality or availability, whereas synthetic oil prices are more consistent. Consider purpose over price: essential oils for healing; fragrance oils for nice smells.
